A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Creed Jones Cantrell Sr. and Lou Walker Cantrell. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Carpenters Local 74 in Chattanooga. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nettie Bigham and Mary Lee Torbett; and one brother, Bill Cantrell. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Thursa Wilson Cantrell of Athens; one son, Alan Cantrell of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Gary McDonald of Ooltewah; one granddaughter, Emily McDonald of Ooltewah; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Luther and Zeola Cantrell of Etowah, and Iago and Jo Cantrell of Athens; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Piney Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ziegler Funeral Home.
