Joe Ben Sneed, 78, of the Short Creek community near Athens, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at his home with his family by his side.

A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Samuel Melton and Onie Davis Sneed, and was also preceded in death by one sister, Juanita Henry; and two brothers, Thomas and G.R. Sneed. An active member of Short Creek Baptist Church, he was involved in the music program and had taught Sunday school for several years. He loved visiting families in the Short Creek community. He served as vice-president of the McMinn-Meigs Singing Convention, and was retired from Athens Furniture Company, having served for 30 years as a finisher and supervisor.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Nora Ann Johnson Sneed of Athens; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Alishia Sneed of Decatur, and Robert and Jeannie Sneed of Etowah; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Randy Bible of Cleveland, Betty and Marvin Crisp of Tyrone, Ga., and Margie and David Shaver and Judy and Larry Malone, all of Athens; 11 grandchildren, Mark and Brian Bible, Ben and Matt Sneed, Emily, Aaron and Alice Crisp, Joe and Jeremy Malone and James and Carrie Sneed; three great-grandchildren, Abigail, Kaitlyn and Jackson Bible; one sister, Kate Carter of Riceville; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Preston and Pauline Sneed of Athens, and Mildred Sneed of Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Saturday at Short Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Walker, the Rev. Jimmy Lewis and the Rev. Robert Sneed officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Short Creek Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church.
