Barney Eugene \"Gene\" Bowman, 77, of Decatur, died Monday, July 21, 2008, at Sweetwater Hospital.

A native and lifelong resident of Meigs County, he was a son of the late Barney Taylor and Lucy Elizabeth Jennings Bowman. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Faye Graves and Mary Lee McHone; an infant sister, Edna Bowman; three brothers, Enloe, LaFawn and C.D. \"Frog\" Bowman; and an infant brother, Alvin Bowman. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, was a member of the IBEW 175 in Chattanooga, and retired after 30 years of service with Dillard Smith Construction Company.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Thelma Roberts Bowman of Decatur; one daughter and son-in-law, Mickie and Scott Franklin of Decatur; one son and daughter-in-law, Kerry Eugene and Ann Bowman of Soddy-Daisy; four grandchildren, Robin Cremins, Kera Bowman, Jerad Bowman and Bo Cremins; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be nephews, Teddy, Billy and Darrell Graves, and Walter, Larry and B.T. Bowman.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ziegler Funeral Home of Athens is in charge of arrangements.
