John Frederick Scruggs, 79, of Sweetwater, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at home.
Born Dec. 1, 1928, he was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. After an honorable discharge, he became an avid pilot who performed aerial barnstorming throughout East Tennessee, which began in the late 1950s. In the early 1970s, he operated the McMinn County Airport for a couple of years, however, continued to fly into the 1990s. He was a member of Sweetwater VFW Post 5156, and was a retired electrician with IBEW Local 760. He worked on the Alaska Pipeline for a few years in the 1980s. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty H. Scruggs; his parents, Richard Frances and Dorothy Scruggs: one brother, Richard Frances Scruggs Jr., formerly of Winston Salem, N.C.; and one granddaughter, Laura Kaye Young Best.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn and Ty Carpenter of Sweetwater, Kay and Jonathan Price of Athens, and Dotty and Rick Monroe and Kim and Curtis Montooth, all of Sweetwater; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Lisa Scruggs of Sweetwater; grandchildren, Sherry McMurray, Kenny Patterson, Nathan Young, Jordan Monroe, Ricky Monroe, Marissa Monroe, Alicia Roy and Brittany Roy; great-grandchildren, Sadie McMurray, Audrey and Julia Patterson, Tristan Myers, Brianna Young and David and Thomas Roy; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his beloved pets, Cocoa and Macy.
The body is at Kyker Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday with funeral services to follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Phil Holmes officiating. Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday in West View Cemetery. Sons-in-law and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Military honors will be provided by Sweetwater VFW Post 5156 and members of Monroe County DAV Chapter 93.
