No tax hike budget OK'd in Etowah
ETOWAH - Etowah residents won't see a tax increase this year, but the city's employees could get a raise. City Commissioners approved the 2012-13 operating budget on the first reading during a called meeting on Monday evening. Committee members officially cancel fair
The committee that has organized the Mid-East Tennessee Regional Fair for the past 17 years is officially calling it quits. In a letter sent to fair volunteers, Fair Manager Kim Womac stated 2011 was the last Mid-East Tennessee Regional Fair. |

Athens school budget awaits Council's action
Athens City School Board members discussed during their meeting Monday night that they would know tonight the Athens City Council's decision on funding the city's school system. The School Board formally presented its proposed 2012-13 budget request on May 7 for the Council to allocate $2,692,600 for the school system. |

$63K allocated for improvements
ETOWAH - City Manager Matthew Gravley has presented city commissioners with a Capital Improvement Needs Inventory, along with a budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year. Gravley explained the inventory is a new tool for the commissioners to use when planning how to spend the city funds in the capital projects and equipment funds. |

Niota hires sewer worker for 90 days
NIOTA - Employment issues dominated most of the Niota City Commission's nearly three-hour meeting Monday night. After lengthy discussion, commissioners finally agreed to hire a job candidate interviewed earlier on Monday to serve as Class 3 wastewater treatment plant operator while the current plant operator is on medical leave. |

Students at TigerRock Martial Arts honored
The students and instructors of Athens TigerRock Martial Arts Academy recently were presented with one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon training martial artists when Grandmaster Dr. He-Young Kimm traveled from his home in Baton Rouge, La., to Master Moises Contreras' school in Athens to teach two HanMuDo seminars - one for the junior students and another for the instructors and adults students. |

DECATUR - The Meigs County-Decatur Chamber of Commerce will soon begin signing up teens for the League of Extraordinary Teens. The League of Extraordinary Teens coordinates with the Chamber of Commerce and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to raise funds and sign children up to receive books from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. |

Athens Federal promotes local spending program
For her birthday, Joyce Davis was going to get a free lunch. She had no idea the other three ladies at her table would, too. Athens Federal Community Bank disproved the old saying, "There's no such thing as a free lunch," when they bought lunch for the first 100 customers at Jenkins Grille & Market Thursday to launch the bank's Eat, Shop & Bank Local initiative. |
