A wider Highway 11 is a good-sense idea
Sometimes an idea makes such good sense that you have to wonder why it's taking so long for it to get off the ground. We think that's the case with the idea of expanding Highway 11 in southern McMinn County from a two-lane road to at least four lanes and even five in several areas along its path to Bradley County. |

This week in local history -- April 22 - April 28
1987 - In the news 25 years ago: Drivers on Decatur Pike may have felt as though they were creeping along at a snail's pace if they obeyed the new speed limit, but Athens Police Chief Sid Mathews said the new 30 mph limit would reduce the number of accidents on the four-lane highway once drivers became accustomed to the slower speed limit. Mathews said the Police Department was giving verbal and written warnings and would start issuing tickets to motorists who broke the 30 mph limit in the near future. He estimated the department would begin issuing tickets within a few weeks. In an effort to reduce traffic accidents and help traffic flow on the busy street, the Athens City Council voted to reduce the speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph after receiving approval from the state Department of Transportation. Decatur Pike was one of the top spots which plagued the city with a high number of traffic accidents. Even if the number of accidents didn't decrease, the severity of the wrecks would be lower, Mathews said. |

This week in history - April 15-21
1987 - In the news 25 years ago: The Etowah City Commission voted unanimously to endorse the idea of building a common facility for the Etowah Rural Fire Department and City equipment. "It only makes sense to me for us to join resources," said City Manager Joe Yarbrough. "We already have an intermingling of equipment and personnel and both have outgrown their present facilities." The Commission agreed, but most sentiments were reflected in the statement of Commissioner Paul Frazier. "I think it is a good idea, but maybe we ought to wait three weeks before making a decision," said Frazier, referring to the general election on May 5 when two Commission seats, those of Don Webb and Jere Miller, were up for election. Miller and Webb both agreed that more study would be needed. |

Remember: Seat belts save lives
Our area has seen several fatal accidents in recent days involving people who were not wearing seat belts. We all learned in school and from our parents to always buckle up when riding in a vehicle, no matter if the final destination is two hours or two minutes down the road. |
