1987 - In the news 25 years ago: Some of the risk of landing a helicopter ambulance in Athens was alleviated with the opening of a new lighted landing pad at Athens Community Hospital. Med-Flight emergency helicopters would no longer have to land in a field across from ACH. Police officers and firefighters were called out whenever a night landing had to be made in the nearby field, which was not owned by the hospital. The small spotlights mounted on the police cars were the only lights available to guide the helicopter as it landed. "This (the landing pad) is fully lighted to FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) specifications. When there were night landings in the field, we had to use spotlights off police cars," said hospital controller Carter Runyan. It took nearly $15,000 to build the lighted, concrete platform on top of a hill alongside the hospital on West Madison Avenue, according to Runyan. |

On My Mind - This week's SMART test: Astronaut trivia
I hope everyone had a chance to see the absolutely spectacular "supermoon" this past weekend. As I understand it, this represents a full or a new moon making its closest appearance to Earth during its orbit. During this time, it appears 12% larger and brighter. The usual distance the moon is from Earth varies from 222,000 to 252,000 miles, but at this supermoon phase, it can be as close as 221,000. If you missed it, don't despair, because it occurs up to five times yearly. |

1987 - In the news 25 years ago: Inmates from the McMinn County jail would not be doing odd jobs for the city of Athens after the City Council refused to ratify an agreement to let inmates perform community service work rather than be in jail. Liability problems in an agreement proposed by McMinn County Executive Ron Banks was the main focus of the Council's apprehension. Athens City Attorney Kenneth Higgins said the Council should wait to take any action on the measure. A clause in the agreement stated, "Should the supervising agency (Athens) desire to be insured against any risk associated with the program, it is the supervising agency's responsibility to obtain and pay for such insurance coverage." Higgins said state law prohibited a municipality from being liable in cases of community service work, but he would have to review the law to see if a solution could be found. |

Thumbs up salutes! May 4
Let's start out today's round of thumbs-up salutes with a nod to brave group of youngsters whose school field trip ended up being all wet. While the Etowah City School sixth-graders were enjoying a field trip to The Lost Sea, the boat containing about 15 students, along with their chaperones, started taking on water forcing several folks into the cool water of the underground lake. |

Help develop young leaders
Today's mobile society can hinder the development of community leaders. Young workers might be in a city or town for only a few years, making it almost impossible to develop and carry out long-term plans. |

1987 - In the news 25 years ago: The projected inmate population for a new McMinn County Jail was increased about 10 percent by planners who described the current population as "tough." Originally given a population of 116 for planning purposes, consultants from Allied Correctional Services told the McMinn County Jail Committee the county should plan on building a facility to house 128 prisoners. The new estimate was reached after considering the "relief factor," Allied president Gary Bowker said. The relief factor is a rough estimate based upon how judges might sentence less serious offense convicts when extra jail space was available. |
